Spinal Decompression Therapy Explained
Spinal decompression uses equipment cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat disc injuries in the neck and low back. This new technology applies distraction forces in a graduated process to the spine, offset by cycles of partial relaxation that cause vertebrae to separate from each other. This creates a vacuum inside the discs that is then targeted for treatment.
This therapy is effective at retracting a painful herniated, or a bulging discinto inside of the disc, from resting on the nerve root, the thecal sac or both. These movements are very slight, but over four to six weeks time, they can produce dramatic results.
The decompression-relaxation cycles bring water and other nutrient-rich fluids inside the discs, which often need hydration, especially as we age. This dehydration is what is behind most slipped discs. As they are hydrated, the torn and degenerated fibers within them begin to heal.
For low back issues, the patient lies on his/her back or stomach on a decompression table. S/he is secured to the table with padded straps around the waist and lower chest. For neck issues, patients lie on their backs, with the neck resting on soft pads.
Spinal decompression therapy has proven to be effective in the treatment of sciata, arm pain, pinched nerves, herniated discs, bulging discs, leg pain, facet syndromes and degenerative disc disease. Patients are screened to determine if they are good candidates for the procedure.
If you or a loved one have struggled with any of the conditions listed above and are considering treatment, ask these painfully honest questions to determine if you might need chiropractic care:
- Do you take painkillers daily and are you dependent on them?
- Are you limited in your ability to carry out simple daily activities?
- Have you had to miss work time because of pain somewhere in your body?
- Have multiple injections or epidurals eased your pain at all?
- Have you been in such bad pain that you are considering surgery, but are reluctant to go under the knife?
If you answered “yes” to any of the questions above, then chiropractic care is worth a good, hard look. Spinal decompression therapy could relieve your pain without surgery, injections and further painkillers.
